Help Me Crack The Code – “Lights Over Paris”
Plaid friends. There is a new mystery that I need your help in solving.
The story:
I got a random friend invite on the 30LBS Skunk YouTube channel the other day from a user I’ve never viewed, called Lights Over Paris.
At first glance it just looked like some bullshit spam from some ridiculously rich OC band that hasn’t released anything. The Lights Over Paris band website is just a temporary one linking to their various social media accounts. I dismissed it immediately as spam.
But something about it struck me as being slightly off.
Upon second glance it looked like a band that could be serious contender for the biggest bunch of douchebags in the history of the music industry. I didn’t understand why these idiots wanted to be my friend. How did they even find me?
The next day I still had a remaining friend invite. Oh yeah, those bozos again.
At third glace it looked like a devilishly brilliant and unprecedentedly smooth execution of a biting satire on the creative process (rather, the lack thereof) behind manufactured pop music. I looked at all the comments on their channel and noticed a lot of people didn’t get it. Their satire is very subtle, but if you watch more than 2-3 of the videos it will start to come through. Even the Lights Over Paris Twitter feed reeks of sarcasm.
Is it really satire? Are they really this clever?
The riddle:
I want to believe. Have a look at the videos after the jump, and tell me if I’m crazy to think that a parody exists in this stuff. Or, is this some kind of viral marketing? If so, what are they pushing? Is it the studio? Are these guys actors trying to gain exposure? What’s your theory?
The first video I saw was the bio on the band’s “DJ”. Douchebag material for sure.
There was one brief moment in the clip that made me raise an eyebrow. Tell me if you recognize it.
The following video is much less subtle, and is the one that made me start to think that this is actually a satire:

I want to believe as well – for their sake, I want to believe.
These guys are definitely for real, meaning it’s not some sort of fake band. They have a massive tour bus, an expensive house, and just toured the country – impressive considering they only have a handful of fans. That said, unless it’s family money (which it very easily could be), there’s no way in hell they made their boat loads of cash legally.
Their debut EP was pretty good, but not out of this world. Some of the tracks they’re previewing for their next record sound like they could be massive pop hits. They’re paying the top producers, mixers, and even other artists to help them rule the radio. They have a chance at this.
The music is pretty good (if you like pop with a little rock influence), but what annoys me the most is that they pay their street team to promote them, and their fans end up spamming twitter like crazy. They pay attention to their fans (admiral), but that leads to many of their fans being losers that don’t have a life other than spamming (aka “promoting”) Lights Over Paris. Gets annoying if you’re on twitter.
Anyways, other than their annoying fans who are losers, I think these guys are a cool project to monitor. They’re certainly more interesting than some broke garage band in the middle of nowhere =)

LOP doesn’t pay their street teams except for the main one in LA. Yes I understand we spam, but that’s one way we get the word out.
Spam is not getting the word out, it’s annoying people and will cause them to just leave negative remarks and have a negative perception of the band. Spamming is not promoting. Read a marketing book.

This has to be something seriously illegal, but they throw one hell of a party. They have nothing to show how they earned this wealthy rock n roll life style. I can honestly say that they are really trying to make music. On what level though……not so clear. I think that they trying to produce their own band and several other musicians as well. Will wont tell me most of anything so its always a little foggy, and where the funding comes from is mostly Rob.

You can throw away some of those conspiracy theories that they are smart enough to execute such quality viral marketing.
These guys are the sad proof that if you have enough money, you can be anything you want in America. Somehow Rob aquired a large sum of cash and the rest of his followers are just along for the ride. They bought their way into hollywood with their producer to get them all the contacts they need, as well as hire everyone else to put together their mediocre tracks. They aren’t signed by any major label and they expect to go on tour following the completion of their record. These guys are forcing themselves onto the general public by attempting to look as legit as possible, but i dont think their album sales will be any more than a small indie band playing at a coffee shop selling copies to their buddies.
In terms of talent, i dont think they have it to launch a full blown tour by themselves. Which is why they are hiring real musicians to play for them while they whore themselves on stage.
So to “crack your code” all you need to know is how Rob got all this money to drop. They aren’t money makers, they are spenders. If they do make money, its got to be shady or just a huge trust fund they are blowing through. These guys are not actors, they aren’t college educated, and they aren’t viral marketers. They are simply a group of friends who leeched onto their rich friend, in hopes to be famous. They are definitely trying to be a legit band, but value the fame too much. These guys are buying their way into their 15 minutes and they’ll be back to living at home with their parents with fucked up credit.
It actually makes me sick to see how people work their entire lives in hopes of being wealthy and secure, yet these guys get a free ride and shove it in your face. These guys are attempting to follow in the footsteps of the pseudo celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag, etc. They were born into wealth, they whore themselves into the public eye. Hopefully, they will just get weeded out when their income dries up.

It is really amazing to see so many opinions and lots of really interesting facts surface about these guys. You’ve convinced me that these guys are real.
Deep down inside I knew it. I was really hoping to be wrong. I really wanted to believe that this was some kind of advanced satire. I’m kind of bummed, but still amused all the same.
Funny how you all talk about “facts.” Where do you people come up with this stuff? I know these guys. They work very hard. Do they also have fun and party? Sure. They’re twenty-somethings. What’s wrong with having a good time. Robb was not “born into wealth” and has no trust fund. Have any of you listened to their music? It’s actually good. And what is wrong with them putting out an album and hoping it will be successful? Isn’t that the American dream? They aren’t faking anything. Robb writes the songs and sings. You all make a lot of assumptions about who these guys are but what are they doing wrong? Why is it bad that they aren’t signed by any major label? Are people who ARE signed by a major label the only ones who deserve success? And how are they forcing themselves on anyone? How can one be forced to listen to their music (once it is released)? Maybe their album sales will be good, maybe it won’t. That’s to be determined. But what is really wrong with a bunch of guys working very hard to produce music using their own money? Would it be better to use someone else’s? Why? And how exactly are they getting a free ride? I hear a lot crap being spewed about these guys but not a lot of facts. Sounds like jealousy to me. How about everyone just wait and see and judge for yourselves once the music is released?
Jealousy does play as a big factor in all of this because that self promoted themselves to be bigger than what they really are. They are self proclaimed musicians and they have yet to release a song, or even play a local show. They ride on the reputations of big time producers, grammy award winning mixers, and feel they are worthy enough to be on the same resume as well established bands.
It is understandable that provided with the large income they obtained, they can go about entering the business. Some people buy fancy cars, some people get hookers, some people get drugs, and some people want to be rock stars. The problem is that when they self promote themselves by spam inviting people to their youtube channel, they are bound to get some negative feedback. This is fueled by the fact that they videotape themselves acting like public nuisances and sitting around in a studio when the real technicians are doing most of the work.
If their instrumental they released on the net is any indication of the music they hope to release, I am not impressed. Taking into consideration the counter-argument, I should save the criticisms until after I hear a finished product, therefore, my impression of these guys is based on what they have self promoted. If they do manage to become as successful with their investment, all the more power to them. But defending them because you know them doesn’t mean they still aren’t douchebags.
If they want to be in the public eye, they better learn how to develop a good reputation with what they put out on the internet. People wont just accept a bunch of rich OC kids buying their way into hollywood.

I saw these guys play the other day, it was a pretty awesome show. their album comes out in a couple months i think.
Let’s assume for argument sake they really are a legitimate band trying to produce and promote their own music with their own money. No problem there. NOW, has anybody listened to their demo tracks (the ones with several MILLION hits) ?

This is not a parody or satire. These guys are for real. They are funded by the lead singer, to which I’m still unsure of how he has financed it, but I’m assuming he’s a trust fund baby.
This band is just a total joke. They live like rockstars but they haven’t EARNED it. They are living through the old business model of developing a rock band, but those days are long gone. They are trying to live like a Led Zeppelin or Van Halen, but guess what? They aren’t. They have no fans. Their entourage is paid for. They don’t even have an album, how can they have their own tour bus? Tour bus for what fans?
It’s just sad to see this, but it’s LA and they aren’t the only bands with a trust fund financing a band’s operation. These guys are frauds. To live the rockstar life without earning it means the music will certainly be uninspired or written by hired guns, because there is no way good music can be written in this sort of environment.

This project is strikingly analogous to another rich kid’s hobby called ‘Drive A’; where they try to be rock stars, but truly buy their way into the limelight. The limelight may not always be the ‘sought after’ fame and genuine attention that was initially bought.
My buddy plays guitar in ‘Drive A’ and has been in the band for appx. 3 years now, and he has shared so much insight about this band ‘Drive A’ that profusely contradicts the contrived story that I’m sure should be close to illegal to fabricate in writing; going as far as saying that the Los Angeles based band’s lead singer and guitarist met outside the troubadour…and began writing music… they’re own style… blah blah blah. 1st of all, the singer lives in Malibu. Secondly, the singer’s billionaire parents held auditions for side kids to be a part of ‘Bruno and the heartbreakers’.
If you look into the short past of this band, they’ve gone thru something like 5 guitarists, 5 bass players and 5 drummers. It’s kind of like Guns N’ Roses; oh wait, except Guns came about organically and has sold over 100 million records. The most ironic thing about these guys, is that they are trying to be punk rock, but I’ve never heard of many punks rebelling against mom and dad forking out a bunch of cash to buy onto tours. I’m not a huge punk rock fan, but I would think that the kids in Drive A are what most punks hate. Just me though.
Nott told me that the parents paid $70,000 to get an opening slot on the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus tour and $35,000 to play 4 shows with Some other band at the roxy. I can only imagine what they paid to get onto the tour with HIM. They released a record sometime last year, but the parents spent something like $400,000 before on a record that didn’t even get released. With heavy grammy award winning producers, and engineers…the whole 9. I find it hilarious that there are manufactured bands like these, that have to make stuff up for people to accept them, when there are plenty of bands out there that work so hard and actually write their own songs.
Los Angeles is home to many phony’s. I would not necessarily call it wrong to buy yourself into hollywood, fame, and everything that comes with it; I would call it self sabotage, because the mystique of your attraction will eventually no longer be a mystique. The truth will surface and then you are subject to ridicule and set as an example of young hollywood poseurs (posers) . If you begin burning bridges and possess a superiority complex, then it will haunt you in the end. Jason wanted to be a rock star, so he changed his personality and became someone I no longer know. And please let me reiterate that I do not speak of jealousy nor bitterness. (it’s not like anyone has much to be jealous of anyway. Drive A is in over a million in debt and has probably sold 1,500 records)
Lets say bands like these became monumentally successful and sold millions of records; is it even worth it to become rock stars after you know your parents have paid for it? Would you be percieved as rockstars through the public eye after the truth surfaces? It must hurt thy soul to live, and in a certain sense, lie to everyone as you stand up on stage and scream “F@%K You”, as if you have something to be mad at. I mean, you live in malibu, your life is made. Identity crisis strikes. Spend that money on an education and earn something for yourself.
It would almost make more sense for bands like these to remain a satire. I would bet they would become more successful, due to the idea that no one takes them serious to begin with anyway.

“Drive A” is way worse than “Lights Over Paris” for the simple fact that Lights Over Paris put it out there – we have money and are using it to get big. Drive A pretends to be a “punk rock” band, yet the lead singers parents are billionaires (they own a shampoo company) financing everything. We have known Rob for years, he’s actualy my son best friend. These guys are for real. So, what if they throw parties and have fun. They are all young. They are not doing anything wrong.
My family has actually heard “Light Over Paris” demo and it’s GREAT!!! In fact I told Rob I will be buying his CD and when LOP is playing live, my husband and I will be there listening to their amazing music. WE LOVE IT!!!!!

To CIA, I’m not sure when the music will be released. I know they just finished a music video for their first single and I *believe* that single will be out very soon (weeks?). I”m just not sure. (Yes, they are behind the original date they thought they’d be putting out their album – hey things take longer than you think sometimes.)
And to those who say these guys have not earned it, please tell me how that is the case. They work extremely hard. You have not seen the results of that work yet and I certainly understand that there would be questions. By why assume that that means they don’t deserve to succeed or that they have failed to earn what they do have? Again, so many ridiculous assumptions about trust funds and buying their way into something. There is NO trust fund. The songs have not been purchased. Robb writes them. The other guys in the band include a long time friend of RoBB’s as well as some other very accomplished musicians. Go listen on iTunes and if you’re able to leave your jealousy at bay while listening, give honest feedback. If your sole intention is to be negative go ahead and do so…Lights Over Paris has already accomplished one of their goals, getting people talking. Someone once said, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity,” and this is a perfect example.

Why doesn’t someone just ask ROBB (TALL) how their magic is being funded??? He may often be confused or a little Lost in life at times, but he actually has a big heart. Sometimes he has peer pressure really pull him down, does silly things when drinking, only dates girls who are after him for money and lacks trust for all females as a result, etc., but I blame that from living in Hollywood and some of the random friends he has. He is nothing but nice to people and I really wish him and LOP the best. Don’t hate him because he was motivated enough to dream and then build it into reality. I know EXACTLY what these guys do for money. I know someone who got scammed by them. These are the guys who claim to fix peoples credit reports and charge them a bunch of money upfront on the credit cards, and they get all of your personal/private information, then using telephone numbers that can’t be tracked, and using voice changing devices, they scam the people and rack in the money. They are so stupid! Its just a matter of time before the FBI kicks the door of that rented house in, and arrest them all.

Unfortunately, Robb & I have both been the victims of a gross misunderstanding. One of the problems of the modern world is we do not deal with each other face to face, human to human, as we did in earlier times. Because of my condition and dialysis schedule, it is almost impossible for me to work at the commercial studio that has been one of my musical homes for almost 2 decades. Instead, I work in my fairly well appointed home studio where my schedule is more flexible, and download projects on which to work from far flung places around the globe.
Working over the internet is a viable way to work but I find that relationships that would normally be face to face are somewhat superficial. We only know someone as well as their e-mails and texts, and though they be wonderful modes of communication, they are not always sufficient to anchor a thriving business relationship.
Robb and I have discussed this and have both learned valuable lessons in good communication. I wish him all success in his endeavours with Lights Over Paris and hope to continue our heretofore successfull relationship. He and his guys have some great hooks and although I know they have already gotten some action with them, they are working hard on more stuff in between their live shows. I understand now that these guys are really trying for the brass ring, one cannot fault them for that, and I hope for them all the best.
Have you heard about the scam they pulled on iTunes? They put up the tracks and bought their own music via stolen credit cards, 750k worth. Scotland Yard got involved in that one.

For your information, the band is great with interacting with their fans. LOP, as does manny other bands, has a street team composed of many dedicated fans around the world. They also have the LA street team who is the heart and soul of all the other teams. They are somewhat of a parent street team that helps promote LOP. Who cares if they get paid? It’s not your job to worry about them. LOP has dedicated fans. LOP is GREAT to their fans.

I posted this above, but it does bear repeating, because it applies here as well: Unfortunately, Robb & I have both been the victims of a gross misunderstanding. One of the problems of the modern world is we do not deal with each other face to face, human to human, as we did in earlier times. Because of my condition and dialysis schedule, it is almost impossible for me to work at the commercial studio that has been one of my musical homes for almost 2 decades. Instead, I work in my fairly well appointed home studio where my schedule is more flexible, and download projects on which to work from far flung places around the globe.
Working over the internet is a viable way to work but I find that relationships that would normally be face to face are somewhat superficial. We only know someone as well as their e-mails and texts, and though they be wonderful modes of communication, they are not always sufficient to anchor a thriving business relationship.
Robb and I have discussed this and have both learned valuable lessons in good communication. I wish him all success in his endeavours with Lights Over Paris and hope to continue our heretofore successfull relationship. He and his guys have some great hooks and although I know they have already gotten some action with them, they are working hard on more stuff in between their live shows. I understand now that these guys are really trying for the brass ring, one cannot fault them for that, and I hope for them all the best.

I heard they screwed over Ron Taylor BIG TIME. They didn’t pay him til a bunch of his friends and he started making threats of the LoP facebook page. Embarrassing… anyone have the whole scoop on this??
From what I’ve heard, the band is broken up. They all moved out of thier Hollywood hills mansion after the singer got served papers for some court problems, and scattered about everywhere. I saw them at a failed festival in OC and the only good thing about the performance was the hot girls they had with them backstage and a Dj drummer combo thing, the rest of the performanc was a trainwreck. They also have a heck of a tour bus that I gladly went on to drink thier beer. Are these guys for real? Do they even play together? Plus one of the guys had sex with my sister and never called her again. Figures.
I can confirm that half the band left (3 out of the 6 members), and it also is true that they no longer have their hollywood hills mansion. How come they got booted from that? What court problems/papers were served?

Robb has been involved in credit card fraud identity theft and many internet scams since 8th grade. I would know since i grew up with him and know his whole family who are all just as pathetic and shady. He has stolen other peoples profiles to create his impressive credit scores and was and still is making money with members of the Russian mafia. The guys has and always will be a poser. He has always bought his way into any sort of social status. Our federal government is going to have a field day making a example out of him. Im sure the inmates will give us a new reason to call him “GAY ROBB”

It’s a sad day in Lights Over Paris history. Yup, all the band members have left the band. This means the drummer, bassist, DJ, and both guitarists have left. Out of the six band members, Robb is the only one left. The bassist and DJ were his friends, anyone have the story on the fued?
What does this mean for the future of LoP?
LoP broke up. If they owe you money, at this point it’s a lost cause.
