This was made in InDesign CS4 with Rockwell Std.
“Why did I make Subway? Why did I do all that crazy undersea stuff in The Big Blue? Why did I go all black and nasty with Nikita?. I don`t know. Because I did. I do what I do because I want to do it, because I want to explore, go looking for things.”
- Luc Besson
This is in no way meant to be a troll, but I’m curious as to what the objective of this piece is. Are you demonstrating typeface choices? The colors? What is the significance (to you as the artist) behind this piece? If you used a font, where does creation play into all of this? Or is it all completely abstract?
Not at all. Yes, demonstrating typeface choices. I almost went with Helvetica, but decided against it in that I’ve been using it a lot lately. I also really like the shape of the Rockwell “L” in this. I think I might just be drawn to geometric slab serif fonts because of their hard edges. The colors (outside of the pale blue background) are those of the French Flag. The significance or… objective.. was two-fold…
A. I want to become more familiar with InDesign (i’m fairly inexperienced) with Layout, etc.
B. This is my attempt at making a tiny homage to Luc Besson and his live action films (minus Atlantis… which is more like a wierd.. documentary about the sea made around the time he made Le Grand Bleu (i think).. (maybe even using footage from Le Grand Bleu) (idk).
Hmmm.. I’m not sure what you mean by where does the creation play into this? Are you saying that if I used a font that I didn’t actually create anything myself and that the creativity in this piece is null? That there is no creativity? I guess my creative part was trying to figure out how to best lay out the information I wanted to include. It’s not exactly the most finessed way it could be since there are a multitude of ways to accomplish it. I actually spent about an hour trying to figure the film titles portion out because I was going about it completely wrong (imo) by making each film it’s own element and trying to stack them in this weird way. Films like Nikita and especially Leon got stretched way too far and it looked awkward. I’m not sure how I feel about the hyphenation of Messenger… it’s the first time I’ve allowed something like it to happen. I have a designer friend who actually likes hyphens. It’s something I’m trying to get used to. But I would say there’s a level of creativity in figuring out the layout.
