The Magpie In Me Is Screaming

Oh! Why hello there!
Please excuse me as I hit the mute button on VH1′s The Fabulous Life Of… (Heiress edition).
Ah, much better.
Just you and I and a computer monitor.
*turns the lights down low* (F1 on a Mac, something else on a PC)
How are you feeling this evening?
Oh, good. I’m glad to hear it…
What’s that?
Oh! This!
*gentle laughter*
This is just my Derby. Ya know… my… Bowler Hat
ChappyChap
Did you know
that the Bowler Hat
was invented
in 1849?

49 Dude!

Did you also know that it’s popularity near the end of the 19th century was one that was across a multitude of social classes?
From stockbrokers to union laborers, people were shitting themselves over the Bowler. I hear Diane Keaton still occasionally lets a turd slip over one. (Hers’ is surgically attached to her scalp)
Oh! I’m sorry!
How rude of me.
Just rambling on about the Bowler.

But alas,
I’ll continue…

It strikes me as quite an isolating knowledge base to know so much about little things that not many outside of our little intimate gathering are familiar with or appreciate. The recent film, The Brother’s Bloom for example, which Dr. Hyperbolus mentioned in the post prior to, showcases a great use of both the Bowler and the Pork Pie. Each one enhancing the character they rest upon rather than just quirky wardrobe choices. Bloom wears the Bowler, the symbol of the everyman, as he literally is and has to be every man to pull off his brother’s elaborate novel-esque cons. Stephen dons the Pork Pie, also popular in the mid-19th century, but probably most recognizable on icons such as Buster Keaton, Frank Sinatra, and countless Jazz musicians. Stephen’s character, like the artists, musicians, and con-men before him, are creators. Dream makers. Architects of imagery, sound, and story that draw you in and allow you to leave the real world behind for awhile.
