A Short Video – Suggestions Welcome
As some of you may know by now, my computers both kicked the bucket last week. First was the Powerbook that Dr. Echo Bloom gave me last year. Then the following day, the mission critical desktop bit the dust. I haven’t figured out exactly what went wrong with either machine, but I did get my desktop back up and running on Sunday with a considerable upgrade to boot.
With a fresh set of guts in this computer, I immediately resumed work on some video projects. The first is a short teaser for Free Riders, filmed with a crappy little point and shoot camera. I also whipped up some quick and dirty music to go along with it. I’m curious what you all think about it, so please give it a look and then leave some comments for me. Does the music fit the action? Does the video pump you up? Does it make you tingle in your nether regions? Let me know… Thanks!
when the bass drops, needs to go into slomo. The music seems more suited for something more frantic, video wise…
I agree with the music comment. The song is fine, but it doesn’t seem to match what you’re showing.
We’ve talked about your doc — are you planning to show a lot of footage like this? If you aren’t then the tease you’ve put together here is fun, but looks more like a tease for a biking stunt video. Maybe that was your idea here…
Aside from computer mishaps, how is the doc going?
I dig the contrast between the feel of the music when it initially comes in and the video. I was expecting the entire ramp to be leveled by an elephant or something – the contrast of him going for the jump and totally bailing is kind of nice. If that’s the reveal, it almost seems like the music should go more upbeat and cheery when you’re showing footage of the movie (which looks *sick* btw – I want to be that man, minus the internal bleeding and such).
I like the clips of you guys shooting cut in with it also. Is there a reason you chose to include the one clip twice?
It actually isn’t a duplicate clip, but two separate riders hitting the same trail. You have to pay attention to the clothing the guys are wearing to notice it I suppose.
Your comment is good though. I should identify who’s riding. I’ll add names to it.
The whole goal of this is to just put something interesting out there. I this is basically throw away stuff (aka behind the scenes) and isn’t a true representation of our film. I realize now that I should be more careful in making that distinction.
The music not fitting is kinda a downer, but I feel like the action should be underscored by fast music. I don’t want to use punk though, because that’s what every other mountain bike video out there uses.
I think the very beginning could use a little work. Cut out the silly stuff and just let it focus on the rider. You start to build a sense of momentum with the bass hits and the first attempt up the ramp. But when you have the record scratch sound and rider just fly by the entire obstacle for comic effect it takes a lot away from the rest of the piece.
I guess in a nutshell; no funny stuff.
