Number 3 – Instrumental #1

This is a piece that’s been kicking around my head for a few years, so when a friend of mine asked if I’d like to try my hand at composing some instrumental theme music for a radio show, I dusted it off and worked it into a sub minute guitar/banjo arrangement. I’ve got a few more sections that I’m going to work to develop in the months to come, so hopefully this will be merely the first steps towards a much larger composition.

It could take a few different forms at this point. I initially envisioned it as a really straight bluegrass instrumental piece with a piano, mandolin, and violin in addition to the guitar/banjo. But while that’s fun and all, I’d like to make it a bit more interesting. I’m planning on using the straight instrumentation suggested above, but gradually introducing digital manipulations to the original analog sources, creating a gradual shift from tradition into a type of acoustic shoegaze-y wash of sound.

At least that’s what I hear in my head. We’ll see what comes out on the other side…

This is definitely not the kind of music I’m into… but I really love it! It sounds like the score to a coming-of-age film (e.g. Almost Famous, All The Real Girls). I like that it’s concise and doesnt drown itself in being too precious. It definitely has that “shoegaze-y” sound/feel.

    Very nice!
Have you ever experimented with something completely away from your audio aesthetic? Like just busting out with a hip hop track or trance song? With your musical palette, it could be interesting to hear what you come up with working on something so foreign from your own sound.

You know, it’s funny. I consider myself a generalist in most things, and it’s served me well – EXCEPT in music. I’ve been (correctly) criticized in the past for being a genre dabbler. My last album had a country song that butted up against a metal song – I’m such a fan of all types of music that I want to do a little bit of everything. But what ended up happening during all of these experiments was that I never really established a singular sound. My sound was the sound of all the genres I was aping – there was no common thread.

So for my next album (that I’m using this site as an advanced scratchpad for) I’m really going to try to make something that is consistent musically throughout the span of an album. That’s my plan.

And THEN I’ll make a hardcore rap album.

Great track, EB! It definitely feels like a soundtrack to some coming-of-age movie… actually it’s like it kinda belongs in Garden State. Next up, can you do a one-man Sigur Ros sorta song with about 12 instruments?
